International data week gets underway in Gaborone, Botswana
The week-long event brings together renowned data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, policy makers and entrepreneurs for discussions on the theme of ‘The Digital Frontiers of Global Science’.
In a hyper-connected world in which web technologies are driving major changes in our lives, scientific research is more digital and more international than ever before.
The International Data Week 2018 (IDW 2018), which begins today in Gaborone, Botswana, was officially opened by His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetsew Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana.
IDW 2018 brings together data professionals and researchers from all disciplines and all across the globe to explore how best to use the data revolution to improve knowledge and benefit society through data-driven innovations. Hosted by the Botswana Open Science and Open Data Forum, IDW combines the 12th Research Data Alliance (RDA) Plenary Meeting, the bi-annual meeting of the research data community, and SciDataCon 2018, the scientific conference addressing the frontiers of data in research.
Over the course of four days, some 820 participants will gather for rich discussions on science and data, with a focus on topics such as:
- Research issues in a global and digital age
- Applications, progress and challenges of data-intensive research
- Data infrastructure and enabling practices for international and collaborative research
A highlight of the conference will be a high-level panel with science ministers from several African countries. The scope of the conference encompasses all areas of research, including the natural and social sciences, humanities, and business and management studies. Similarly, the applications of data outside of research will also be considered.
IDW is co-organized by the ISC World Data System (WDS), the ISC Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), the Research Data Alliance (RDA), University of Botswana (UoB) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).
